Hariyo Pahad Restoration

Hariyo Pahad Restoration Ongoing Programme · हरियो पहाड पुनर्स्थापना

Restoring 420 hectares of degraded hillside with native trees, fodder and community forest user groups.

The slopes above Panauti and Roshi lost much of their tree cover over three decades of firewood cutting and grazing. Landslides followed, and so did drying springs.

Hariyo Pahad works with 18 community forest user groups to restore 420 hectares of hillside. Each group decides which species to plant — fodder trees near the village, native broadleaf species higher up — and runs its own nursery. Survival is counted every year for three years before a plot is marked restored.

Objectives

  • Restore 420 hectares of degraded forest with native species
  • Run 18 community nurseries producing 300,000 seedlings a year
  • Raise seedling survival above 80% at year three
  • Put women in at least half of user-group leadership posts
