Most families we work with farm less than half a hectare of terraced land. Chemical inputs have become expensive and the soil on many terraces is tired. Organic, agro-ecological farming is not a niche for them — it is the cheaper, safer way to keep the land producing.
Through farmer field schools we teach composting, liquid manure, bio-pesticides, mixed cropping and multipurpose crops for marginal land. Lead farmers in each ward host demonstration plots so neighbours can see the results before they change anything.
